Kaia Kanepi overpowers Sara Errani in main draw – Kremlin Cup 2011
Estonian Kaia Kanepi got the better of Italian Sara Errani in the opening round of the Kremlin Cup 2011. The two took up the gauntlet on the indoor hard courts of the Olympic Stadium, Moscow and after one hour and thirty nine minutes
the 26 year-old Estonian, Kanepi battered the Italian in straight sets of 6-0, 7-5 on Monday the 17th of October 2011.
Kanepi had decided to serve first for the initial round of the match as she had won the service toss and she got off to an amazing start as she not only held her serve but capitalized on an early break. She then repeated the feat
and placed herself comfortably on the scoreboard at 4-0 by the end of the first four games.
Kanepi powered through the remaining set and in the fifth game as she held serve, she was now only a game away from bagging the opening round. In the sixth game Errani served nervously and double faulted on her second serve to
gift the opening set with a bagel victory to the Estonian rival.
Errani was not able to break Kanepi even once during the opening set and after taking a thrashing in the first set, she pulled up her socks but was unable to bag a set.
The second round of the match was initiated by Kanepi again and this time she got off on the wrong foot as she was unable to bag her service game. On the contrary, Errani was first to take the lead on the scoreboard at 2-0 by capitalizing
on a break and then with a hold of serve. However, in the following two games the Estonian closed in on the deficit and brought the score to a tie at 2-2 with a hold of serve and a break.
Kanepi then held serve and broke her adversary to take the lead at 4-2 by the end of the sixth game. In the following two games the players once again break each other one after the other and the scoreboard had shifted to 5-3 by
the end of the eighth game.
In the ninth game Vinci capitalized on a break and then held her serve to bring the score to a balance at 5-5 by the end of the tenth game. At this point in the match, either player could’ve walked away with the match but as Kanepi
held serve, she further went on to breaking her adversary and clogged away with the set and the match.
The Estonian will now be facing fourth seeded Francesca Schiavone in the second round the Kremlin Cup 2011.
