Kaichi Uchida defeats Sumit Nagal in the first round of Boys’ Singles – US Open 2012
Eighth seed, Kaichi Uchida of Japan, came back strongly after losing the first set to oust India’s Sumit Nagal 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round of the boys’ doubles event at the US Open on Monday.
The Japanese contestant required one hour and 52 minutes to throw his Indian opponent out of the final Grand Slam of the season.
Start of the contest was steady by both players, as they did not drop their serve in the first six games to even out the score at 3-3. Uchida hit a blow to the Indian player in the seventh to move ahead 4-3 but he could not consolidated
on it, squaring it off at 4-4. Nagal capitalised on this life line, clinching two games in a row to close it 6-4.
Uchida was himself to blame for this poor result in the opener, as he was unable to hit any ace and committed four double faults. On the other hand, Nagal smacked one ace and did not make any double fault.
In the second set, Nagal and Uchida won their opening serves to take the score to 1-1. The Japanese contender played error free game later on, claiming triple breakthrough and not allowing Nagal to win even a single game till the
end to triumph 6-1.
Uchida drastically improved his serve performance in the second set, as he banged in two aces and committed only a single double fault. The Japanese participant put in just 11 of the 14 first deliveries and converted whopping 10
of the 11 of them into points.
The right-hander, Uchida, started the final set from where he had left in the second, as he bagged opening three games to build a 3-0 lead. Nagal managed to open his account by holding his serve in the fourth but he failed to win
any more in the rest of the contest, sealing it 6-1.
Uchida played his ground strokes cautiously, as he hit just winners and made one unforced error in the decider.
The Japanese player will face Chilean player, Christian Garin, in the round two.
