Kaichi Uchida upsets Kimmer Coppejans in the quarter-finals – Boys’ Singles US Open 2012
Top seeded, Kimmer Coppejans received a straight sets shocker, 6-1, 6-4, at the hands of Japanese contender, Kaichi Uchida, in the quarter-finals of US Open Boys’ Singles, held at the hard courts of New York,
United States.
The eighth seeded Japanese adopted an aggressive stance since the start of the opening set. He thundered on the Belgian participant and broke his serve twice, in the second and fourth game, towering the score
line with 4-love. He progressed with a strong determination to capitalize all breaks and secured the limelight by marking a 6-1 win.
The 18-year-old Japanese had a comparatively lower first serve accuracy of 61 percent but he clamped 14 of 17 points. On the other hand Coppejans had a better first serve of 73 percent, nonetheless, he could
not attain even a single serve break of the three opportunities offered to him.
As compared to the opener, the second set proved to be a tougher challenge, with Coppejans drawing the first blood and bringing the score line to 2-1. However, the scores evened out to 2-all by the end of the
fourth game. Both the contenders tried their best to crush each other’s serve and kept equalizing the scores after every alternate game. Uchida broke her rival’s serve toward the end and nudged forward to jolt down her 6-4 win.
The right-hander Japanese delivered 63 percent first serve on target, converting 14 of 20 points. Coppejans gradually moved forward with a comparatively lower first serve precision of 48 percent, pocketing 11
of 15 points on it. This time around the Japanese secured all the two break points in the set, whereas his rival did not even snatch a single break point of the three presented.
The duo faced each other for the second time after the 2011 Wimbledon Championships, where Uchida maintains his 2-0 lead in the head-to-head series. Earlier the Japanese challenger rallied past the Belgian native
by giving him a straight sets defeat 6-3, 7-5.
Uchida is drawn next against the 13th seeded Liam Broady in the semis. The German faced a tough challenge at the hands of Russian Wayne Montqomery 7(8)-6, 7(7)-6(4).
