Kailai Zhang topples Nathaniel Sulistyo in qualifying round of the 2011 Canada Open Grand Prix
Canada’s Kailai Zhang powered his way into the main round as he toppled Indonesia’s Nathaniel Sulistyo in the Men’s Singles qualifying round of the 2011 Canada Open Grand Prix, in Canada, on Tuesday, July 19.
Kailai played tremendous badminton against the Indonesian and was successful by winning the three-set fight in 46 minutes. It was one of the most entertaining matches of the day for the local crowd, as the Canadian shuttler delivered a superb performance
against Sulistyo.
The start of the match was quite thrilling, where Kailai played terrific badminton against the Indonesian, who was a little slow in the opening game. However, Sulistyo geared up his speed and remained close until the end of the first-half, where he was at
10-11.
After the break, the Canadian geared up the pace of the rallies by playing to his maximum speed. Sulistyo committed some errors in the ending phase of the first game, which helped the Canadian to win the set by a margin of 21-17, in 15 minutes.
The Indonesian fought back strongly in the second game of this interesting contest, as he changed his tactics. His change in strategy worked well as he levelled the match after a tough fight.
Kailai played well in the second set, but his opponent was also displaying top-class badminton and was successful in winning points at the crucial stages. The Canadian lost the second game with the margin of 19-21, in 17 minutes.
The final set of this encounter was completely dominated by the Canadian, who showed no mercy to his challenger in the whole set. Sulistyo tried to continue his winning run by playing aggressive badminton, but his opponent was alert in this set. Kailai’s
defence was better in the game, as he returned the powerful smashes of the Indonesian with considerable ease.
Kailai then dominated proceedings and clinched the final set with a margin of 21-11, in just 14 minutes. The rubber-set fight ended with a 21-17, 19-21 and 21-11 score on the board.
