Kailani to follow in the footsteps of her mother for the upcoming Epsom Derby after winning the Pretty Polly
Kailani, Monsun’s three-year-old bay filly out of mare, Kazzia, has started following in the footsteps of her mother and after some ten years has the same target as was her mother’s, the Epsom Derby.
Mahmood Al Zarooni trained filly could not win the Group 1 Qipco 1000 Guineas Stakes on 6th May at Newmarket but did not return empty handed.
The three-year-old won the Tweenhills Pretty Polly Stakes (Fillies) on 6th May at Newmarket over a mile and two furlongs.
With Mickael Barzalona, she led the runner up, Hazel Lavery, by seven lengths. Settling third behind the winner was Lacily. She was the other Godolphin entry for the race.
Mahmood Al Zarooni added: "We were pleased with Lacily as well. She did not enjoy the ground but showed a good attitude by keeping on, even though she was one of the first beaten.
The 5/2 favourite of the race, Arsaadi, finished eighth on the track of ten.
Her mother was the most popular for the 1000 Guineas and Oaks.
Kailani’s very first career race and win was in the British Stallion Studs Supporting British Racing E B F Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (Division I) on 18th October 2011 at Yarmouth over a mile.
With Frankie Dettori onboard, she led the runner up, Shestheman, by just half a length. The 5/4 favourite of the race, Aniseed, ended fourth on the track of thirteen.
It was back in 2004 that Ouija Board won the Epsom Derby after claiming the Pretty Polly. So now Kailani has two records to break and maintain for herself, her mother’s and the 2004 miracle, Ouija Board.
Not only is her pedigree highly reflective of the most likely outcome of her participation in the Derby but her record too till yet stands unbeaten.
Trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni commented: “She is a light-framed sort of filly and I do not think she should have another run before Epsom.
“Her mother went straight from here to there and there are some ladies you have to be gentle with."
"Frankie said that he could not judge her on this ground and we will hope to find another race for her before we decide about the Oaks.”
Having all the dimensions in her favour leaves her with very less than dominating the race.
