Kalle Samooja shares the sixth position after day two of the Mercuries Taiwan Masters
Kalle Samooja of Finland carded a one-over par on Friday to take the share of the sixth position, at the Mercuries Taiwan Masters, on September 28, 2012.
The Asian Tour event is being played at the tough Taiwan Golf & Country Club in Taipei, featuring some of the best players on the tour.
Under the difficult playing conditions, the Finnish player managed to post three birdies against four bogeys for an equal-par half-way score.
Despite recording an over-par score on day two, Samooja is just one stroke behind the leaders at a one-under par overall score.
There were a total of five players who settled for a share of the top spot, including Antonio Lascuna, Wang Shih-Jui, Lien Chi-Wei, Baek Seuk-Hyun and Tsai Chi-Huang.
Samooja, who lost his Asian Tour card last year, is expecting to record a good finish this week, to confirm his full-time playing status on the tour for the next season.
He now plays the Asian Tour events through sponsor exemptions and he is currently making his seventh appearance of the season on the tour.
“This is my seventh event this year. I didn’t get to save my card last year so I only get to play in minimal events. I hope I can get my card for next year. That’s my main goal this year,” said Samooja.
Talking to the reporters in a post-round media session, he stated that the strong winds blowing on the course did not allow the players to play accurate shots throughout the day.
Therefore, it was essential for the participants to focus mainly on their putting techniques, which played a crucial role in saving pars.
“It was really tough. The wind got strong and it kept getting tougher out there. I was putting really well the whole day so that’s the key for my result. My ball striking was solid but nothing spectacular,” he said.
Chi-Wei, who had a four-stroke lead, entering the second round, faltered in the second round and carded a five-over par 77. Still, he was lucky to remain in the share of the lead at the end of the day.
