Kam Hing Choong, Dane Sharp
move into quarterfinal – Saskatoon Boast Open 2011
The biggest upset on the opening day of the action at the Prairie Autohaus Saskatoon Boast Open 2011 in Canada was when Malaysian qualifier Kam Hing Choong flabbergasted third seeded Englishman Eddie Charlton in the first round
of the tournament of the PSA World Tour Challenger 10. The tournament is a squash event in its tenth year at the YMCA in Saskatoon.
Although in the first two sets of the match Choong made a tremendous effort to clog them, he was unsuccessful. He got an early break in the third set and for the first time in the match he had taken the lead to eventually close
out the match at 11-6. He repeated the tremendous feat in the fourth but this time his opponent managed to take 7 points.
The 22-year-old from Ipoh Perak made his way back into the game from two games down to eventually level the score in the fifth set. However, after only a short rally, Charlton was forced to retire as he injured, throwing in the
gauntlet and gave Choong the match 8-11, 6-11, 11-6, 11-7, 7-6 (ret.) after 55 minutes of play.
In the second match that was between two compatriots, Canadian Dane Sharp and Fred Reid, Sharp was extremely focused and determined to win this round. The 26 year-old home-boy (Sharp) was able to clog the match in three sets with
a score of 11-8, 11-2, and 11-7 in just 33 minutes.
During the first set both the challengers had a tough competition as they matched an eye for an eye but Sharp’s resoluteness and serve were the key components in cutting the goose chase. On the contrary, Reid put in a lot of effort
in the beginning but in the second set he literally nosedived in his performance and eventually lost the set.
Third set saw both the rivals again pick up momentum and as they kept bagging their games the score tied at seven points but from there onwards the younger Canadian (Reid) lost all hope and was unable to regain his control in the
set. On the contrary, Sharp rushed past his adversary towards the finish line and sealed his victory of the match.
Malaysian qualifier Kam Hing Choong will get into a faceoff with Canadian Dane Sharp in the quarterfinal of the tournament.
