Kam Po Wong wins second stage and celebrates overall lead of Tour d’lndonesia 2011

Hong Kong-China team’s Kam Po Wong put in a brilliant effort in the second stage of Tour d’lndonesia 2011 on Monday, October 3. He also wrapped up the overall leader’s yellow jersey.
The race started in Bandung and finished in Ciamis. The 38-year-old Po Wong finished safely and set the fastest time of 2 hours, 42 minutes and 31 seconds to cover the distance of 112.7 kilometres.
Wong was very happy and said, “It was an exciting race, and I was surprised by people’s enthusiasm to watch and support us along the road. The race was difficult because the wind was blowing hard in the opposite direction of our route. This is a good result
for me and my team.”
Previously, Po Wong grabbed first place in point race of Track World Cup 2009 and also won the road and point race of Asian Games 2010.
With 66.4 kilometres to go, the three cyclists made a breakaway lead including, Kam Po Wong, Jimmy Pranata (Polygon Sweet Nice) and Dijkshoorn Geert (Global Cycling Team). They took an advantage of a few seconds over the peloton but Geert was caught by the
other cyclists.
Wong and Jimmy were in good form and managed to get away from the pack. A crash happened in the final kilometres but the duo avoided the accident and got away. However, Po Wong increased his pace and crossed the finish line ahead of the other cyclists.
Race director Erwin Anwar told the media, “We still don’t know what caused the accident. We will examine the video tape.”
Pranata was in runner-up spot with 7 seconds down to Wong and Geert finished third with a difference of 24 seconds ahead of Botman Wim and Nandra Eko Wahyudi.
Po Wong secured overall standing with a time of 4 hours, 55 minutes and 29 seconds while Pranata was in second place with a difference of 24 seconds.
Edmund Hollands (Eddy Hollands Bicycle Sevices) finished third with a difference of 26 seconds ahead of Shinichi Fukushima.
The third stage will start in Ciamis and end in Cirebon as all the cyclists will cover the distance of 114.7 kilometres.
