Kamakura or Nikko ????

My original plan is 2.5 Days in Tokyo and 1 Day in Nikko. I just found out about Kamakura. I'm planning to do one day trip outside Tokyo.

Now, I wonder if I should go to Kamakura or Nikko. Can these two combined as one day trip.

About me: I love old historical place. Last year, I went to Ang Kor Wat and love it.

Thank you.

  1. You can't go to those 2 on the same day. Kamakura is to south of Tokyo while Nikko is to north.  It's opposite direction from Tokyo and those are so far away.

If you like historical place, Kamakura is better.

  2. Kamakura is better.  Hire bikes (from south of the east exit) and have a good map at hand and you can see much more.

In Nikko things start closing at 3pm so unless your on the 7am train out of Tokyo... Kamakura.

  3. That's real tough.  The first two opinions are both very good and it's definitely true that you can't do both on the same day.

Personally, I prefer Nikko, but since you will be visiting here only once in your life, I agree that Kamakura would probably be more memorable and awe-inspiring for you.

You can't go wrong either way - both places are fantastic.

  4. If you have only one day, Kamakura is closer to Tokyo and manageable.  If you want to go to Nikko, you want to spend at least a couple days.  I like both places, but one day in Kamakura would be better for you.  You can easily hike around or ride Eno-den(local train) to the place near by.

  5. Both are beautiful, but if you are pressed for time I think Kamakura is a better option.

You can easily go there by train. It is a nice little village to walk around in and there is lots to see.

If the weather is good you can even go to the beach.

  6. There is no way you can do both on a same day, they are opposite direction from Tokyo.

They both have beautiful historic temple and shrines you can visit; I personally prefer Kamakura because its quiet atmosphere and I love Enoden trains. And the statue of Buddha in Kamakura is a must-see.
