Kamil Capkovic slams Filip Veger in final qualifying round – Slovak Open 2011 CH
Top seed, Slovak Kamil Capkovic crushed his Croatian rival, Filip Veger, in the last qualifying round of Slovak Open 2011. On Sunday November 13th, both contenders went face to face to place a berth in the first round
of the tournament, contested in Bratislava, Slovakia. The contest lasted for just an hour and twelve minutes and was an easy match for the local favourite; he won the match in straight sets 6-0, 6-4.
Veger was completely out of touch and had lost bulk of his previous encounters whereas his opponent was hot favourite to win the match provided his outstanding form, superior ranking, local atmosphere and massive support from local
crowd.
Croatian haven’t played on hard-courts recently while his rival was regularly playing on that surface so the outer chance of any upset was also written-off with this factor. It was a very rough ride for the visitor as his opponent
was lightening fast across the court and was extremely efficient to read his mind and adjust according to the required scenario.
Capkovic started the proceedings in style with two aces in his first game and continued his domination with thumping winners in the second two clinch 2-0 lead. Croatian was rusty and his footwork was still; his eye and hand co-ordination
was completely out and his shots were wayward, landing outside the dimensions of the courts.
Local kept on hammering his opponent and struck one more ace in his next two serve games and broke his rival’s serve thrice in succession to close-off the first set in a commanding fashion. Crowd was delighted and cheered every
point won by the top seed. Chances of his qualification for the main round of the tournament were bright with all factors running in his favour and leading the match 1-0.
Second set started in similar fashion but in the third game a stunning forehand across the court won the visitor first game of his set and that too by breaking his opponent’s serve. He levelled the score in the next game at 2-2
and in the next two games both players exchanged breaks to take the score at 3-3.
Slovak held his serve in the seventh game and so did his opponent in the next game to push the score at 4-4. But then another setback for the visitor came in the last game of the set where he couldn’t hold on to his serve, struck
a sub-standard backhand straight into the net, and lost the second set battle.
Kamil Capkovic qualifies for the main round draws and plays Sergiy Stakhovsky.
