Kamke/Mayer beat Brunstrom/Marx in doubles first round – BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2012
Albeit the defending champion, Florian Mayer, lost in the singles draw, he teamed up with the German compatriot, Tobias Kamke, to register a victory over the duo of Johan Brunstrom and Philipp Marx in the doubles opening round
of the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy on Thursday. Kamke and Mayer took one hour and 23 minutes to wrap up victory at 6-2, 7-6(10), to book a spot in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
The Germans cruised through the opening set of the match and stamped their authority over the game right away. They completely outplayed their opponents to bag the first set in an assertive manner but Brunstrom and Marx bade a
thumping comeback in the second set to give them some real tough time. They posed some solid resistance against the German duo and dragged the set into the tie-breaker round but failed to deliver the final blow in the end. Kamke and Mayer went through the
gruelling tie-breaker round and finished it off in their favour to come out as the winners.
Brunstrom and Marx clinched 24 out of 38 first serve points and registered two out of three break points in the match, yet finishing on the losing side in the end. The German contenders were phenomenal with their serve game throughout
the contest, delivering 75 per cent of it on target and clinching 45 out of 61 total serve points en route to victory. Kamke and Mayer crafted 10 break chances in the match but only four conversions proved sufficient for them to drive their bleak opponents
out of the tournament.
Bagging the opening set at 6-2, Kamke and Mayer had to overcome the solid resistance from their opponents in the second set. One break point apiece took the set into the tie-breaker round and the decider was stretched to a total
of 22 points. The Germans closed out the second set at 7-6(10) to reach the round of eight at the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy.
The fourth seeded American-Italian tandem of James Cerretani and Fabio Fognini will face Kamke and Mayer in the quarter-final clash of the tournament on Thursday afternoon.
