Kamui Kobayashi: I am the senior driver and need to change approach in Sauber – Formula 1
Sauber’s Formula 1 drivers Kamui Kobayashi has stated that he will look to change his approach in the team as he is the leading driver in the 2011 season alongside rookie Sergio Perez.
The Japanese driver added that although he missed out on a point scoring opportunity in Valencia and Silverstone, he is very much looking to score some points in the German Grand Prix whatever the temperature is on the circuit.
Kobayashi added that the team has improved in the 2011 Formula 1 season from 2010 season and he is very confident to take on the challenge in the remainder of the 2011 season.
He said, “I am more confident this year. I have had to change my approach as I am the most experienced driver in the team.”
Kobayashi missed out a point scoring opportunity in the Silverstone Grand Prix firstly due to an accident with Mercedes’ Michael Schumacher after which he had to dive into the pits with a punctured tyre.
Afterwards, he was penalised with 10-second stop/go penalty for dangerous driving in the pit lane. Shortly after completing the penalty, the Japanese driver faced an oil leak in his car and retired from the race.
Kobayashi stated that although he missed an opportunity to score points in the last two races, he is still confident about the prospects of the Sauber team in the 2011 season.
“I am pretty confident here, in any temperature, and with any track conditions. We will just focus on score points. The last two races I could not get points, and this is what we need to do. So far our progress has been good. From last year we have improved,
but now the next step is not so easy - but we have done a pretty good job,” commented Kobayashi.
Kobayashi is leading the midfield drivers in the points table and also his young teammate Perez.
The German Grand Prix will be contested on July 24, 2011 and despite the season almost over from the top teams’ point of view, Kobayashi will still have some opportunities to prove his worth to the Sauber team.
