Kamui Kobayashi not content with his Spanish Grand Prix performance – Formula 1 news
Sauber-Ferrari driver Kamui Kobayashi has said that he is not feeling contended with his performance in 2012 Spanish Grand Prix which was held at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona on May 13.
The Japanese driver secured fifth place finish in the Spanish GP after taking a start from 9th grid position. However, he said that if he had a trouble-free qualifying, he could have managed to secure a podium finish in the race. Even though, he expressed
that he felt happy with his fifth position but he said that his car was capable of more.
“I absolutely believe I could have made it onto the podium if I had not been so unlucky in qualifying,” Kobayashi said. “If you start ninth you can be happy finishing fifth, but the car had more potential.”
He added, “I was in traffic and overtaking was not easy. I could not do it on the straights with the help of the DRS because there I wasn’t close enough.”
Furthermore, he said that it is very important to perform well in the qualifying so as to secure a competitive grid position for the race.
“If you want to get in front of the pack you have to get everything right on the weekend. This is what Pastor (Maldonado) did,” said the Japanese.
He is currently standing at 11th place in the drivers’ championship with 19 points. Moreover, he is 4 points ahead of Paul di Resta of Force India and 3 points behind his teammate, Sergio Perez.
In the season opener at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia he came 6th after beginning the race from 13th place in the grid. Conversely, he could not score even a single point in the second race at Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia as he was retired.
Afterwards, in the third race at Shanghai International Circuit in China, he could only secure 10th place finish even after starting from third place in the grid. In the fourth race at Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir, he again could not pocket any
points and finished at 13th position after setting off from 12th grid position. Nonetheless, he is aiming to perform well in the approaching races.
