Kamui Kobayashi says Sauber looking to grab points in every race of 2011 Formula 1 season
Sauber Formula 1 driver Kamui Kobayashi has said that they are not a top team fighting for the championship in the 2011 Formula 1 season, but a midfielder trying to grab points in every race.
Kobayashi added that Monaco was not a great weekend for the team because his teammate Sergio Perez crashed exiting the tunnel. However, he said there were still some positives to take out from the race.
Sauber have managed to top the midfield teams and are currently sitting sixth on the constructors’ table.
Kobayashi thinks that Sauber will do their best to grab points at least in every race.
“Sauber is not a top team - it is a midfield contender - and our paramount objective is to be in the points every weekend. At the moment I think we are doing quite well, but believe me, there is a lot of work behind that success,” commented the Japanese
Formula 1 driver.
He further added that Pirelli are still alien to the Formula 1 teams and a lot of work is to be done to understand the tyres properly.
“We still don’t know the tyres fully - it is a new situation every race weekend - so we tried to build a car with a very open window, so that if the tyres are not what we expect we still can fight and have a good performance,” explained Kobayashi.
Sauber have done really well on the Pirelli tyres as their degradation ratio is relatively less than other teams.
In the Australian Grand Prix, Perez was able to complete the whole race distance with only one pit stop.
Furthermore, Kobayashi added that Sauber have so far reached their expectations in terms of points and performance. He also said that they are so many races still to go in the 2011 season and Sauber will try to improve on their performance.
The Formula 1 season now moves to Canada on June 12, 2011 for the seventh Grand Prix of the season.
