Kan/ Schuurs edge past Kostic/ Kovinic in the second round of Girls’ Doubles – French Open 2011
Victoria Kan of Russia teamed up with Demi Schuurs of the Netherlands to beat the duo of Natalija Kostic from Serbia and Danka Kovinic of Montenegro in the second round of the Girls’ Doubles category of the 2011 French Open at
Paris, France on Tuesday. The winning pair took 84 minutes to seal the contest in the third set 4-6, 6-3, 12-10, moving into the quarterfinals of the French Open, season’s second Grand Slam.
It was an-action packed performance from both the teams as they put a great show for the local crowd at the Stade Roland Garros on Tuesday. Kan and Schuurs had a sloppy start to the contest, dropping the opener early but made an
electrifying comeback in the next two sets to clinch their second round victory.
After a flying start to the contest, Kostic and Kovinic lost their steam in the latter parts of the game and finally had to submit the match to their opponents. Although they had a finer first serve accuracy than their opponents,
Kostic and Kovinic ended the contest as the losers. They lost the match with a difference of seven points.
First serve accuracy for Kan and Schuurs was 70 percent but they grabbed 30 of 49 total serve points in the match, while breaking their opponent’s serve four times. They were startled by the brilliance of their top seeded opponents
but quickly made a tremendous comeback to turn the table on their opponents. Kan and Schuurs developed excellent chemistry, something they lacked in the first set, to clinch the second set en route to the decider.
Kostic and Kovinic, who displayed an amazing display of tennis in the first set, could not hold the momentum and lost the second set with a 3-6 score line. They played a flawless game in the first set but could not retain their
form and spilled out a series of unforced errors and one double fault to let Kan and Schuurs take the second set at 6-3.
Both teams entered the final set with high hopes to grab the early advantage but it was Kan and Schuurs, who once again surprised their top seeded opponents. Although Kostic and Kovinic put up a great fight to push the set into
a tie-breaker, they could not grab the big points and allowed the Russian-Dutch duo to dominate with their game. Kan and Schuurs closed out the final set with a 12-10 score
Up next for Kan and Schuurs is the Slovak pair of Jana Cepelova and Chantal Skamlova in the quarterfinal of the tournament.
