Kanako Watanabe clinches Women’s 200m breast-stroke crown in Beijing: 2011 FINA World Cup
Kanako Watanabe of Japan splashed hard during her breast-stroke final heat on the second evening of the seven-stop FINA World Cup series in Beijing, China, on Wednesday, November 9, 2011. Watanabe claimed gold medal in the Women’s 200m breast-stroke race
over her rivals, Keiko Fukudome of Japan and Hye Jim Kim of Korea.
Watanabe kicked off the final heat in thrilling fashion and touched the finishing wall in a record breaking time of 2 minutes and 19.05 seconds. After the splash, Fukudome was placed at second spot in a time of 2 minutes and 20.36 seconds, while Jin Kim
also performed well during the following race by touching the finishing cordon in a mark of 2 minutes and 20.59 seconds to attain bronze medal.
In the meantime, Darae Jeong of Korea gave her best try in the pool by clicking the finishing blockade in an impressive blot of 2 minutes and 20.74 seconds to secure fourth position. Despite Darae Jeong’s scintillating performance, Su Yeon Back of Korea
also swam to the expectations of her followers and claimed fifth position by touching the finishing fence in a mark of 2 minutes and 21.49 seconds.
Carina Joline Hoestman of Sweden was not far behind her rivals in the respective race and finished sixth by clicking the finishing wall in a time of 2 minutes and 22.36 seconds. Meanwhile, Liping Ji of China pocketed seventh position in a mark of 2 minutes
and 23.57 seconds and Maria Temnikova of Russia settled at eighth spot after she touched the finishing wall in a time of 2 minutes and 24.39 seconds.
After the session’s completion, Watanabe was awarded with the gold medal and accolades for her performance in the pool. The World Series is offering a great opportunity to all athletes from China, Korea, Japan, Germany, Australia and United States to prepare
themselves hard for next year’s Olympic Games, in London. The final round of the 2011 FINA World Cup series is scheduled to take place in Tokyo, Japan, from November 12-13.
