Kanako Watanabe conquers Girls 200m breast-stroke gold title: Day six – 3rd World Junior Championships
Kanako Watanabe of Japan conquered the title of Girls 200m breast-stroke meet on the sixth day of the 3rd World Junior Championships, organised by the Federation Internationale De Natation (FINA) on Sunday, August 21, in Lima, Peru.
Watanabe presented a breath-taking swim of 2 minutes and 25.52 seconds for the gold medal of the event, while she remained only 0.33 seconds above the championships mark of 2 minutes and 25.19 seconds, set by Olga Detenyuk of Russia during 2008. Her time
was 5.40 seconds slower than the world mark of 2 minutes and 20.12 seconds, clocked by Annamay Pierse of USA at the 2009 Rome World Championships.
Watanabe was trailed by Lisa Fissneider of Italy, who was only 0.49 seconds slower than the gold medallist and submitted an effort of 2 minutes and 26.01 seconds for the second position. Fissneider edged out her closest competitor, Irina Novikova of Russia,
with a difference of only 0.03 seconds and Novikova earned third position with a timing of 2 minutes and 26.04 seconds.
Novikova’s team-member, Maria Temnikova remained 1.73 seconds slower than her and surfaced as the fourth position holder of the event, by reporting on the finishing wall in a time of 2 minutes and 27.77 seconds. She was trailed by Mar Garcia Urzainqui of
Spain, who occupied fifth position of the event, by ending her swim in a time of 2 minutes and 28.56 seconds.
She was chased by Miyu Otsuka of Japan, who remained 1.46 seconds slower than her former finisher and clocked a time of 2 minutes and 30.02 seconds. KC Moss of United States earned seventh best spot of the event, as she stayed only 0.21 seconds away from
Otsuka and posted a time of 2 minutes and 30.23 seconds. Meanwhile, Taylor McKeown settled as the eighth finisher of the event, as she remained 2.46 seconds behind Moss and produced a time of 2 minute and 32.69 seconds.
In addition, the podium finishers collected their medals and accolades after the conclusion of the session.
