Kane Williamson hopes to compete against West Indies – Cricket News Update
Disappointed with his side’s showing in the first of the 5-match ODI series against West Indies, New Zealand’s stand-in captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KS-Williamson-c1813, hopes the Blackcaps can make a comeback in the remaining fixtures.
The visitors entered the ODI leg of the tour after being whitewashed in the 2-match T20 series, the first of which also saw them losing regular skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/LRPL-Taylor-c1849 to a shoulder injury, leading to Williamson’s appointment as stand-in captain.
Batting first in the ODI yesterday, the Kiwis barely managed to reach 190, courtesy Watling, who scored 60, which was also his highest ODI score in 10 outings. In their reply, the West Indians were to chase 136 in 33 overs (D/L method applied) and did so
with only one loss (a duck for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/LMP-Simmons-c1843) and 52 deliveries to go.
After the defeat, Williamson admitted that his side needs to work hard in the batting department if it is to compete against the Caribbean powerhouse, which includes the likes of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KA-Pollard-c1754.
The Kiwi skipper said, "I guess we didn't start too well with the bat, we scrapped our way to some sort of the total, and again the power-hitters hurt us. We can learn from the West Indies, they bowled well, swung it a bit, we need to learn from the mistakes
we are making."
The young stand-in skipper is aware that the Caribbean contingent poses a tough challenge in the presence of such power hitters, but aims to make the best out of his inexperienced side to prove a point in the coming matches.
“We are looking to improve and close the gap, which is looking quite big at the moment. We are a young side, playing a very experienced side, we have to show the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 side that we can compete," Williamson added.
The second ODI of the series will be played tomorrow at the same venue, with the home team leading by 1-0. Let’s hope that the visitors come up with a better performance so that the fans witness a closely fought battle, which was not the case in the first
match.
