Daneria Kaneria found guilty by the ECB’s disciplinary panel - Cricket News Update
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 leg-spinner, Danish Kaneria, guilty on accounts of two corruption charges.
The verdict came out after a three-man disciplinary panel set up by the (ECB) - consisted of Gerard Elias QC, David Gabbitass and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jamie-Dalrymple-c1658 - called Kaneria to appear for a hearing, to investigate his alleged role for a spot-fixing episode in 2009.
The inquiry had earlier found his former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Essex-c783 teammate Mervyn Westfield guilty and jailed him for four months after the 24-year-old had admitted to his role in corruption where he received £6,000 in exchange for conceding 12 runs in his first over, during
a match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Durham-c782. In Kaneria’s case, according to English Cricket Board (ECB), the crucial evidence against the player came from Westfield.
The 31-year-old however, had denied any role and his lawyer Farogh Nasim claimed that the allegations against his clients had no strength.  Contrary to his claims, the ECB replied that the evidence presented by the leg-spinner was "plainly lies," and he
recruited spot-fixers.
The panel concluded that, "http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Danish-Kaneria-c1314 knowingly induced or encouraged Mervyn Westfield not to perform on his merits in the Durham match." They were highly critical of the evidence presented by Kaneria’s lawyer. "We consider that in many respects the
evidence of Danish Kaneria simply does not stand up to scrutiny and is plainly lies," the panel said.
During the trial it was revealed that Kaneria had reportedly told Westfield that "you are young and it is hard to make money; I have a way that you can make money quicker" which culminated into a meeting with an Asian businessman.
Kaneria was arrested and then cleared by the Essex police in October 2010. However, the panel was told the bowler was previously warned by the Anti Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) in 2008 as well, over his connections with a bookmaker Anu Bhat, the same
businessman whom Kaneria had introduced to his former teammate.
"There is no doubt - and no suggestion to the contrary - that one of the Asian men referred to by Westfield was Anu Bhatt,” the panel said, while further rejecting his claims as unsatisfactory evidence.
On the other hand, the PCB has already indicated it to the International Cricket Council (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625) that they will respect any punishment handed out to Kaneria by the game’s governing body or the ECB.
