Kanishq M sends Sumit Sharma packing in 2012 Junior National Badminton Championship
The young but talented Indian shuttler Kanishq M proved his point in the 37th Junior National Badminton Championship by qualifying for the main draw on Sunday, November 11, 2012
He unseated Sumit Sharma with a favourable result of 21-15 and 21-10. This epic tussle was part of Boys’ Singles Under-17 event and it prolonged to 25 minutes in the local badminton arena of Imphal.
Kanishq, who was underrated earlier in this tournament, alarmed all the contestants by sealing a straight-set victory.
He started the ball rolling straight away in the beginning of first set and maintained that momentum all the way to final moments.
On the other hand, Sumit Sharma had to face a woeful exit despite showing decent fighting spirit.
The opening game set the overall pace of the match as Kanishq did not give his rival enough time to get settled and gained an early advantage.
He prevailed in the establishing rallies and piled up a respectable figure of 7 in no time. He did not lose focus at any stage of the game and finished the first half of the set with a mountainous total of 11.
Later part of the game also belonged to Kanishq as he kept on gathering valuable points as he cruised to victory.
Though, Sumit Sharma made every effort to counterbalance the situation but he failed to hit the mark. He could not match his competitor’s skills and surrendered after reading 21-15 score on the board.
The following segment of the showdown was completely a one-sided affair as the suppressed shuttler of the previous game could not rise and knelt down easily.
In the first half of the set, Kanishq unleashed a series of well placed strokes and clinched many points in a row. He capitalised this initial advantage to establish an unassailable lead before the interval.
At mid-game break, he was having an upper hand with figure of 11 when the opposing shuttler narrowed the gap with couple of successive points.
However, Kanishq showed strong character and managed to finish this contest in a favourable manner. He placed an overwhelming score of 21-10 and qualified for the main round of this tournament.
