Kansas City Chiefs’ Dontari Poe wants to prove critics wrong – NFL News
Kansas City Chiefs selected defensive tackle, Dontari Poe, as 11th overall pick in first round of the 2012 National Football League (NFL), but Chiefs’ decision to draft Poe was not received well and a number of critics thought Chiefs had wasted
an opportunity to select a real talent.
Poe, who was initially projected to be a second-round pick, did not comment on the criticism, but he did not turn a deaf ear to it either. He absorbed it all and decided to give answer to it through his performance.
On Friday, May 11, 2012, Poe attended first day of Chiefs’ three-day rookie minicamp and when asked about negative response people had given on his selection, the rookie asserted that he would prove his critics wrong.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Poe commented on the criticism:
“Every day I come out here that is on my mind. People have said those negative things about me and I just want to prove them wrong. I’m trying to do that every day.”
During the minicamp, the players will not undergo aggressive workout and only spend most of the time learning the playbook.
Some of the rookies will be able to join the veterans after the rookie camp if they do not have any educational commitments. However, they will not be able to train properly with the senior players until the training camp this summer before the start of
the preseason games.
Poe is also learning the team’s style of play and the coaches also told him about the team’s expectations of him.
The minicamp will focus more on developing mental strength of the rookies rather than improving their player style and Poe thinks that it is the right thing to do as college players need to be strong mentally.
He said:
“We were focusing on just being explosive. We really don’t do too much of this kind of technique in college, so I’m just out here trying to learn the mental part the best that I can now and the physical part will come later.”
Poe, along with some other rookies, will also get a chance to see veterans working out during the offseason strength programme next week.
