Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel will start Week 9 game against San Diego Chargers – NFL News
As expected, quarterback Matt Cassel will get his starting position back for Kansas City Chiefs’ Week 9 game against San Diego Chargers on Thursday, November 01, 2012.
Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel made the announcement on Tuesday, October 30. Cassel will replace Brady Quinn, who got injured during Week 8 tie against Oakland Raiders. According to The Associated Press, Crennel said:
"Sometimes a second chance energizes a guy. He knows he's going to have to play, and he's going to do the best he can. We have to help him as well, and if we all take the same attitude we'll be successful."
Quinn was injured during the first quarter after being sacked by Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain which was followed by a hit from safety Matt Giordano.
Cassel played the rest of the game and completed 20 out of 30 passes for 218 yards along with a touchdown.
It is still not known how much playing Quinn will miss due to the injury. Meanwhile, Cassel is not bothered to get the starting position in such circumstances. Cassel said:
"I'm excited to be playing. I don't look at it that way. No matter what my position is, I'm going to be the same guy, and I think that's the reason I was able to go in there and execute at a high level Sunday. I was ready and my approach was the same. Preparation has to be put in"
Chiefs made Cassel their starting quarterback at the start of the season. However, he failed to live up to the expectations.
Crennel retained Cassel as the starter despite getting more and more pressure from the fans. Cassel then eventually lost the place due to a concussion he got in Week 5 game against Baltimore Ravens.
Chiefs signed Cassel in 2009 for a six-year, $63 million deal. He was selected for the Pro Bowl in the 2010 season. He was drafted by New England Patriots as a seventh-round, 230th overall, pick in the 2005 draft.
