Kansas City Chiefs crush Carolina Panthers 27-21 – NFL Week 13 Recap
Kansas City Chiefs defeated Carolina Panthers, 27-21, in Week 13 game on Sunday, December 2, 2012, at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, MO.
Before the game Chiefs prayed for their late linebacker Jovan Belcher, who had killed his girlfriend and shot himself a day before the game.
Chiefs mourned his death and a moment of silence was observed in the stadium for remembering all the victims of domestic violence.
Chiefs linebacker Andy Studebaker said of Belcher:
“Jovan was like a brother to us. His family was family to us. Our hearts go out to them, man, and the game maybe took our heads off it for a while, it brought us closer as a team today, I think, but it's never going to be easy."
It was a tough game but Chiefs played really well, Chiefs running back Peyton Hillis rushed for two yards towards the end zone and took the lead in the first quarter.
Panthers quarterback Cam Newton threw a 47-yard pass to tight end Greg Olsen, who scored a touchdown and tied the score.
Chiefs kicker Ryan Succop kicked a 42-yard field goal and gained three points for the team.
In the second quarter, Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith caught a 23-yard pass from Newton and scored a touchdown, leading the score to 14-10.
Late in the quarter, Cheifs tight end Tony Moeaki received a one-yard pass from quarterback Brady Quinn and scored a touchdown to lead the score to 17-14.
In the third quarter, Quinn threw a three-yard pass to wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin, who scored a touchdown and took the lead to 24-14.
Panthers wide receiver Louis Murphy caught an eight-yard pass from Newton and scored a touchdown, and took the score to 21-24.
Newton completed 15 of 27 passes for 232 yards and scored three touchdowns, most in a game this season by him.
At the end of the fourth quarter, Succop kicked a 52-yard field goal and gained three points for victory.
According to the Associated Press, Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel was bereaved but as a coach he knew he had to be on the ground, he said:
"As far as playing the game, I thought that was the best for us to do, because that's what we do. We're football players and football coaches and that's what we do, we play on Sunday."
According to Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, it was a difficult time for him and his entire organization, as Belcher was part of them.
He said:
“We have so many guys on our team and our coaching staff who are really, really hurting."
At 3-9, Panthers are ranked 4th in National Football Conference (NFC) South, their next game is against the division leaders Atlanta Falcons.
At 2-10, Chiefs are ranked 4th in American Football Conference (AFC) West, their next game is against Cleveland Browns.
