Kansas City Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel name Gary Gibbs as new defensive coordinator – NFL News
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel has stepped down from the post of defensive coordinator and also announced on Monday, November 05, 2012 that assistant Gary Gibbs will be the new defensive coordinator of the team.
Chiefs also made changes on the roster as they released cornerback Stanford Routt in a surprising decision made just eight months after signing the player.
Crennel explained that the decision to give away the job of defensive coordinator was based on the notion that he needed to concentrate more on the overall performance of the team rather than a part of it. According to the Associated Press, Crennel said:
“We have a young team and some guys, the perception may be that I’m a defensive coach, that I’m a defensive coordinator, and I don’t care about other parts of the team, which is not true. By my being with them more, I think they will see I’m concerned about
the whole team”
Crennel has been severely criticised for giving too much time on the defensive matter which supposedly led to the offensive meltdown.
The decision looks more towards soothing the critics rather than making a positive impact on the team as Gibbs has been less effective in improving performance of the players while playing his role as linebackers coach. Crennel carried on and said:
“I will continue to be in meetings sometimes. I will meet with Gary on a regular basis as well as I do with others to know what the game plan is and what’s going on there. But I’m going to spent more time with the whole team and less time with the defence.”
Meanwhile, the decision to waive Routt comes after the cornerback failed to step up in place of former Chiefs cornerback Brandon Carr.
The cornerback was signed by Chiefs on a three-year $18 million deal and was expected to be the perfect replacement for Carr.
However, in seven starts this season, Routt managed to get a mere 21 tackles with no sack. The coach blamed himself for all the defensive woes that Chiefs are currently entangled in.
