Kansas City Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel says quarterback Matt Cassel doubtful for Week 6 – NFL News
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel has indicated that starting quarterback Matt Cassel is highly unlikely to play in their Week 6 tie against Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, October 14, 2012. This increases chances for backup quarterback Brady Quinn
to start.
Crennel gave this news while informing the media about status of Cassel’s injury on Monday, October 08. According to the Associated Press, Crennel said:
“Some individuals recover faster than others, but with the emphasis on concussions in the league, they're making sure we do due diligence with the player's health, making sure he's not rushed back, so we'll see.”
Cassel got injury on his head during the fourth quarter of Chiefs’ Week 5 game which they lost 6-9 against Baltimore Ravens. He took a shot on his head from Ravens defensive end Haloti Ngata and laid on the ground unconscious for the next few minutes.
The quarterback was then able stand up and walked to the sidelines where he was immediately taken to the locker room.
Crennel has not yet ruled out Cassel’s availability for Week 6 game.
Quinn will likely start his first game in two seasons. He played the rest of the game after Cassel’s injury.
In absence of Cassel, third-tier quarterback Ricky Stanzi will become Quinn’s backup. Talking about the quarterback position, Crennel said:
“That's one of the good things about having three quarterbacks on the roster. If you lose one, at least you still have two guys, and you don't have to go trying to pick someone up off the street. You have guys who have been in the system.”
Although Crennel might be right about having a good number of quarterbacks on the roster, it does not guarantee good performances from those players.
Quinn was not very successful with his previous teams and being benched for two seasons does not help him getting any better.
Chiefs publicly criticised their fans who cheered the injury to Cassel. If Quinn manages to put up good performance in absence of Cassel, he will most probably cement his starting place for the rest of the season.
