Kansas City Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel stands by his decision to go for field goal – NFL News
Despite his team going through one of the worst seasons in the franchise history, Kansas City Chiefs head coach has shown intent to continue a conservative approach.
Crennel was talking to reporters on Monday, November 26, a day after his team lost its eighth game in a row after getting a 9-17 beating by Denver Broncos in Week 12.
The coach has defended his decision to prefer field goals over touchdowns and does not think that his team needs to go out of the way to get success. Crennel said:
“You have to do what you feel is right at the time. I felt that going against that team, you have to get points on the board, and that it's important. The more points the better, but if you don't put points on the board, that's not going to be good enough.”
Crennel has given such comments even though many of the players came out after the game and accepted the reality that three field goals are not enough to win a league game.
One must admit that scoring nine points against Broncos offence that has averaged 30 points per game in their last five games is not enough to get on top.
Crennel’s decision to go for field goal seemed acceptable when the team went for the first time, but the next two attempts came when Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning had started to flex his muscles.
The last field goal came in surprising circumstances as Chiefs needed to reach the end zone at least once to save the game. Crennel insists that he was not wrong even at that time. He said:
“When I made the decisions that I made, I had good reason for making them and you don’t look back. You make your decision and if they work, they think you’re a genius. If they don’t work, you go the other way. You’re a dummy.”
It is not the first time that Crennel has come under fire for his decision making. He only recently stepped down as the defensive coordinator of the team after failing to give attention to both of his positions.
