Kansas City Chiefs in lucky escape over Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning’s remarks-NFL News
Kansas City Chiefs could consider themselves lucky to have escaped the possibility of Indianapolis Colts filing tampering charges against them over the remarks related to their interest in signing the quarterback, Peyton Manning, who is still a Colts.
Yet, the sword of an independent inquiry from the National Football League (NFL) hangs over the head of the coach, Romeo Crennel, and possibly the general manager, Scott Pioli, who have spoken of the possibility of acquiring Manning upon his availability.
Crennel had said that Chiefs would "be crazy not to consider" the player after he is cut loose by Colts.
The coach’s remarks came a couple of days after some reports pointed out that Chiefs’ GM had met the player’s agent, Tom Condon, twice over the period of a week.
Pioli has maintained a mum over the reports, neither accepting nor denying them, but the coach added fuel to the fire by emphasising that the team should definitely explore the opportunity if and when it comes by.
All these remarks were taken in the context of violation of the league’s rules that restrict teams from commenting on the possibilities of a player’s move until he makes himself available in the market.
Since Peyton Manning is still very much a Colt, the comments have thrown a light on something, which remains a remote possibility.
Some sections of media have hinted at the likelihood of Colts pressing anti-tempering charges against Kansas City Chiefs, and against the coach, more specifically.
Chiefs might get a lucky escape in terms of dealing with Colts, but they are still prone to the risk in case the league office finds the remarks in violation of the rules and orders an independent inquiry into the matter.
There is no report indicating whether the NFL would be interested to pursue the matter or not.
It is pertinent to note here that the Kansas City Chiefs successfully pressed a similar charge against Detroit Lions during the 2011 NFL offseason.
As a result, Lions had to forfeit a draft pick to swap it with the Chiefs.
The stay of Peyton Manning, who is due a payment of $28 million bonus by Colts until March 08, 2012, is reportedly becoming an impossibility for the team, given that there is no confirmation about Peyton’s recovery status and chances of return.
A number of teams have jumped on the bandwagon and expressed a desire of signing Manning off the free agency.
Kansas City Chiefs were the latest of the potential sides anxiously waiting that to happen.
They might have to wait little longer to see their ambitions fulfilled, as so far the Indianapolis Colts are on to very much call Peyton Manning to find an acceptable solution.
