Kansas City Chiefs name Brady Quinn as their backup quarterback – NFL News
Quarterback Brady Quinn has been named by Kansas City Chiefs to play as backup to the starting quarterback Matt Cassel.
Chiefs’ head coach Romeo Crennel made the announcement on Monday, August 27, 2012. Quinn looked quite promising in all of the three preseason games.
Both Quinn and quarterback Ricky Stanzi were fighting for no. 2 quarterback position. Crennel explained his decision of making Quinn the backup and commented:
“Both guys have good ability, competed and worked very hard. We went with Quinn because he has more experience and that’s the main thing that I feel like will benefit us the most. He’s played in the games and has experience.”
On the depth chart, Stanzi will be no. 3, the same position at which he had started the 2011 season. He failed to live up to the expectation of the team during this offseason.
In the preseason game against St. Louis Rams, Stanzi got sacked four times. The 2011 fifth-round draft pick managed to cover just 14 yards in a total of four offensive series. Crennel believes that Stanzi will be able to make a comeback. Crennel said:
“I think he is a good young player with a lot of talent and upside to him,”
Quinn was signed by Chiefs as a free agent this offseason. He was a first round (22nd overall) pick of the 2007 draft by Cleveland Browns. Quinn signed a five-year rookie deal with Browns worth $20.2 million.
Quinn played three seasons with the Browns before he went to play for Denver Broncos. In his time with Broncos, Quinn was a third-tier quarterback behind Tim Tebow and Kyle Orton.
Quinn has started a mere 12 games in his professional career. He is yet to throw a ball in the league since 2009.
Quinn is hoping to prove his worth and wants to get the Chiefs’ starting quarterback position in coming future. Quinn said:
“Everyone wants to be a starter in this league and play on the field, so that’s ultimately the thing I think you would be happy about having a title of sorts. Right now it’s all about preparing to get a win in Green Bay.”
