Kansas City Chiefs need a change that matters after another dismal season – NFL Special
Kansas City Chiefs have not been able to taste victory many times this season and this has taken the team morale to its lowest.
Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel is trying every possible thing and is changing whatever he can to make this team win games. However, there is not much a coach can do if he does not have a skilful talent available on the roster.
There seems to be all sorts of problems currently lingering around the team. This is true for both offensive and defensive side of the ball.
The offence is working out ways to get better and the team has shifted its opinion many times during the season as to who should be the starting quarterback.
Quarterback Matt Cassel, who was assigned the starting role in opening few weeks of the season, failed to provide a game-winning performance. This has been the case in all the four seasons with the Chiefs.
However, Chiefs does not have a replacement that could change their fortune. Even though quarterback Brady Quinn has shown good performance on the field, he has not been consistent enough to become an ultimate solution for all the offensive woes.
Even though Chiefs added many veteran free agents in the offseason, one must admit that these players are usually too expensive and have short-term prospects due to their age.
For a lowly team like Chiefs, the only way to gets a quality franchise player is via draft pick, but it seems that Chiefs does not have a very successful record in doing that either.
So, they seem to have no choice other than to look forward to next year’s draft and add a top-notch quarterback to the team.
Crennel knows how important it is to get a young talent on the roster and evolve him under the established system to make him a long-term prospect for the franchise. Crennel once said:
“If you draft a guy, you can mould him because he’s a lot younger and hasn’t been exposed to as much. Sometimes when you go get guys from other places, they have a predetermined notion about who they are and about how they should fit, and sometimes they
have to adapt and adjust to your system. Some guys can make that transition smoothly; other guys struggle with the transition. You see it all the time in the NFL. It’s drafting. It’s developing players. It’s coaching players – it is players taking ownership.
It’s the whole gamut.”
Chiefs do not have a very good record in drafting players. This year’s first-round pick Dontari Poe has not shown his capabilities yet and is taking time to grow.
General manager Scott Pioli must learn from the example of Indianapolis Colts who added quarterback Andrew Luck as the first overall pick this year and he has taken the team on the course to playoffs.
After another disappointing season, there is a chance that owner Clark Hunt might restructure the entire Chiefs administration that will include Pioli. However, looking at Hunt’s record, it is highly unlikely to happen.
