Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel going through a disrespectful offseason – NFL News
Quarterback Matt Cassel is one of the players who are having a tough time this offseason. Last week, he was booed by the hometown fans during a charity softball game and now he has faced immense criticism by the fans as well as media over his play in the
downfield.
However, Cassel has been able to absorb much of the pains and have tried to be as calm as possible. Cassel talked to the reporters after a practice session during the Kansas City Chiefs training camp. He said:
"I'm going to be the same guy each and every day, I'm going to give you 110 percent of what I have, and some people like it, some people won't. You know what? I'm going to give it my all."
Cassel has also been unable get better support from the Chiefs’ camp. Chiefs’ owner Clark Hunt came out a few weeks ago and said on a sad note that they hoped to sign Peyton Manning.
This will not be a confidence booster for a player in desperate need of support. Cassel played nine games last season before getting a season-ending hand injury.
He looked average in those nine games, getting only ten touchdowns. He got nine interceptions in the 2011 season as compared to just seven in the 2010 full season, in which he got the Pro Bowl after scoring 27 touchdowns.
Another issue that has made the offensive team less productive is the frequent change of personnel in the coaching staff of the offensive team.
Chiefs had five offensive coordinators in a span of four years. With every new coach comes new strategy and game play.
Apart from that, former head coach Todd Haley had the tendency to change some bits and pieces of offensive system every now and then.
Chiefs current head coach focuses more on the defensive game-play. He has reiterated the fact that there will not be many changes in the offence from his side. He said:
"I don't know why everybody beats up on the guy, other than the fact we haven't won the way everybody wants us to win. But he did take us to a playoff game. I've said before that we have to develop Matt's consistency. I think we are going to have an opportunity
to do that this year."
With the return of Jamaal Charles in the offensive line-up, Cassel will have a chance to give better productivity.
