Kansas City Chiefs sign Andy Reid as their new head coach – NFL News
Kansas City Chiefs have reached an agreement with Andy Reid as the new head coach of the team. Chiefs made the announcement via Twitter on Friday, January 04, 2012. The franchise will officially unveil Reid as the head coach on Monday, January 07.
According to the Associated Press, Reid has signed a five-year deal. Moreover, according to the reports currently circulating in the media, the former Philadelphia Eagles coach will have a major influence in most of the matters regarding the on-field issues.
Reid had an illustrious record working as a coach with the Eagles from the 1999 season to the 2012 season. In his time with the Eagles, Reid took the team to as many as nine playoffs and won 10 playoff games during that time.
The coach had 130 regular season victories with the Eagles. After hearing the news about Reid’s commitment with the Chiefs, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said:
"Congratulations to Clark Hunt and the Kansas City Chiefs for hiring a good man and a good coach. We wish Andy, (wife) Tammy and their entire family all the best in their new home."
Even though Reid had a tremendous record with Eagles, he would have an even bigger task to rejuvenate a team like Chiefs that has only managed to reach the playoffs three times in last 14 seasons.
Chiefs have finished the 2012 season at the bottom of the league and the only major asset they have is their no. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft. According to ESPN Radio, offensive lineman Eric Winston said:
“I'm definitely excited. You don't accidentally win 100 games over 10 years in this league. Obviously, the guy knows how to coach and win. It's definitely something we need."
Chiefs fired their previous head coach Romeo Crennel on December 31, 2012, after dismal performances in last few seasons.
Chiefs have made the decision to sign Reid just a few hours after they parted ways with long-time general manager Scott Pioli. Giving his final goodbye to the team, Pioli said:
"I'd also like to thank the players, coaches, scouts and countless other employees, throughout the organization and at Arrowhead Stadium that have worked so hard during my time here.”
