Kansas City Chiefs succumb to Houston Texans
The Kansas City Chiefs hit a brick wall by the name of the Indianapolis Colts at the end of their unbeaten run and they haven’t since been able to put their act together. Sunday night the Kansas City Chiefs went up against the Houston Texans and were defeated.
The Chiefs now stand at 3-2-0 and with Sunday’s win the Texans moved up to 4-2-0
The Chiefs put up a great fight and the pressure was squarely on the Texans to stay in the game. The Texans did more than just keep up with the Chiefs, they crept into the lead to win the game.
It was the Chiefs who took early control of the game. In fact, they stayed in the lead until the final minutes of the final quarter. Matt Cassel headed up the first drive for the Chiefs starting on the 26 yards line after the Chiefs returned a 67 yard kick
for 23 yards. Cassel was slow but still managed to make the downs count. Jamaal Charles made his contributions with the rushes. Cassel’s 14 yard pass to Dwayne Bowie was the longest play in the drive with respect to yards. When the Chiefs had forced their
way to the 2 yard line, Cassel threw his first touchdown pass of the game. While the offense and defence clashed, Cassel ran to the right to find linebacker Mike Vrabel open in the endzone and threw the ball at him fast and low. The extra point was good.
Houston scored next. Minutes into the second quarter, Texan’s quarterback Matt Schaub threw a 44 yard pass to receiver Andre Johnson. Houston’s offensive lineman made sure no one got through to Schaub and the quarterback took his time and waited until Johnson
was clear of all the Chiefs before he threw the pass. Cornerback Brandon Carr was in pursuit but tumbled a little and fell behind Johnson before the pass was thrown. The wide receiver was forced out of bounds on Kansas’ 30 yard line.
After moving up to the 5 yard line, Schaub threw the touchdown pass to Joel Dreessen. Schaub extended the play by as much as he could with his eyes fixed on Dreessen and waited for the right time to throw. He got the timing perfect and when he finally let
the ball go, Dreessen caught it standing still in the end zone.
Chiefs wouldn’t let the scores stay even for long. By the end of the quarter Cassel was already shooting for the endzone. From the 17 yard line Cassel found Dwayne Bowe and scored the second touchdown for Kansas with just seconds remaining in the quarter.
Houston’s linebacker DeMeco Ryans was injured in the play and won’t be making a return anytime soon. As soon as the third quarter began, Cassel and Bowe would score a touchdown again for the Chiefs. Bowe caught the ball on the 35 yard line as he was running
right on the field. Cornerback Kareem Jackson chased Bowe to the edge of the endzone and tried to push him out of bounds but couldn’t. At least 3 Texan’s dived at Bowe but none was able to stop him.
The Texans hit back with a touchdown in the next three plays. Schaub started with 17 and 11 yard passes and Derrick Yard ran the remaining 38 yards for touchdown. 10 of the Chiefs tried to tackle Ward as he made his way to the endzone, none of them was successful.
The Texans scored again the in the 4th quarter and took the lead for the first time in the game. Schaub was sacked once in that drive while he threw 37 yards.
Exactly 5 minutes later the Texans lost their lead again. Chief’s running back Thomas Jones streaked to the left and forced his way past Houston’s defence to score Kansas’ last touchdown of the game. The Chiefs were at 31 against the Texan’s 21 points. Houston
had 7 minutes to cut down the lead and they pulled through.
They scored in the very next drive, which lasted just under 4 minutes. Arian Foster, scored the touchdown with a one yard rush. The Texans were as quick as they could be but time was still against them. They had to take back possession and score in the remaining
3 minutes to win or even equalize to take the game into overtime.
The defence was up to the task and did not even allow the Chiefs 10 yards on their 3 downs forcing a punt on the 41 yard line. Having taken back possession it was now up to the offense. Schaub pushed hard and successfully completed 10, 15 and 31 yard passes
in the first 4 plays. Schaub only missed 3 passes in the drive before throwing the touchdown pass to Andre Johnson with just 36 seconds left in the game.
Houston was now 35 against the Chief’s 31 points. The remaining time was just not enough for the Chiefs to make a comeback and Houston won the game.
