Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe signs franchise tag – NFL News
The entire saga about the future of Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe is finally over as the player has signed the franchise tender.
This was announced by the Chiefs through a statement on Friday, August 18, 2012. Bowe has signed a tender worth $9.5 million.
Both Chiefs and Bowe tried throughout the offseason to get a deal done but failed to sign a contract till the July 16 deadline.
The signing of the tender has come at a time when the Chiefs are finishing their training camp.
Most veterans try their best to not participate in training camp. With the signing, Bowe becomes the last of the franchised players to sign a tender with their team.
Bowe has a challenge to learn the completely new offensive system put in place by Chiefs new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. He has three weeks before the Chiefs start the new season against Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, September 09.
Bowe has played five sparkling seasons with Chiefs. He has been an integral part of the offensive setup.
Last season, Bowe caught 81 passes and covered 1,159 yards. He also got five touchdowns in a season that saw Chiefs starting quarterback Matt Cassel getting injured. Bowe had to work with backup quarterback Kyle Orton and Tyler Palko.
Bowe had been looking for a long-term deal throughout the offseason, but failed to reach an agreement with the Chiefs who were also willing to make Bowe one of the highest paid wide receivers in the league.
The long standoff could hurt his reputation in Chiefs administrative hierarchy. Chiefs drafted Bowe as the 23rd overall pick in the first round of the 2007 draft.
In Chiefs’ last three seasons, Bowe has covered the most yards and received more passes than any other fellow teammate.
Bowe left a message on his Twitter page about the signing. It said:
“Back in the swing of things. Did physicals & passed conditioning test. Excited to b w/my teammates & get back to business...go chiefs!”
