Kansas City Royals add Aaron Laffey on waiver from New York Yankees - MLB News
Kansas City Royals added another left handed batter to their already strong line up on Tuesday afternoon after Aaron Laffey was claimed on waivers from New York Yankees. Adding the left hander to their bullpen mix, the Royals will certainly have more strength
and depth in their batting attack now.
In supreme form throughout the season, Laffey has been included to bring more balance to the side. He has given impressive performances since the start of 2011. In 47 games he participated in, the 26-year-old left hander scored with a 3.88 ERA. He split
the running season with the Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees. Aaron Laffey spent his previous four seasons with the Cleveland Indians.
"It gives us another option from the left side," general manager Dayton Moore said. "He's still very young. He's always had the ability to spin the ball, and our scouts feel like he's an upgrade for us."
Royals created space on their 40-man roster by designating right hander reliever Jesse Chavez for assignment. Spending most of the past season at class AAA Omaha, he allowed only nine runs and 12 hits in more than seven innings in four big league appearances.
After making nearly $431,600, Laffey is now available for arbitration for the first time this winter. Left with one option, he could also be sent to join the Minors next season. Laffey was brought into the Seattle side on March 2 earlier this year, for cash
and Minor League utility man Mathew Lawson. Although he moved to New York Yankees on a waiver claim on August 19, he did not appear on their roster for the post-season.
Laffey pitched for the Indians mainly as a starter back in 2007-09 before he was assigned the duties of a bullpen in 2010. In his 126 career games, the left hander is 21-23 with an impressive ERA of 4.34, starting 49 times in his five year career. It will
be interesting to see what impact Laffey will have for the Royals when the regular season starts up again.
