Kansas City Royals’ batters hammer New York Yankees 11-5 to clinch series: MLB Update
The promising rookie, Eric Hosmer, who was recruited just a week ago, blasted a marvellous homer and two runs as the Kansas City Royals clobbered the New York Yankees by 11-5 on Thursday night, May 12, to earn their first series win in Bronx since 1999.
Hosmer, who launched his first career homer last night, was pleased to kick the game off in the second inning to set a smooth road to a historical triumph.
Hosmer said, "It's been a real good three days. We came to New York and took two out of three from the Yankees. We're winning ballgames and you'll keep seeing the smile on my face when we keep winning."
As soon as Hosmer opened the account in the second inning, the Royals’ batters burst up and piled up six game-winning runs. Mike Aviles followed Hosmer and hit a runs batted in (RBI) single, and then Melky Cabrera, Alex Gordon, Billy Butler and Jeff Francoeur
all swung their bats for RBI single each to take an unassailable 6-0 advantage.
Billy Butler touched another hit and Melky Cabrera splashed a beautiful one-run homer off the Royals’ starter Ivan Nova in the fourth inning taking the lead to 8-0.
"I found out today that we hadn't won one since '99," Butler said. "Roughly, give or take a little bit, I've been here roughly half of it. I have experienced a lot of failure here. I think it is a statement for us. Throughout the whole season, we've been
fighting and we don't give up, no matter who we're facing."
The Yankees’ Robinson Cano hammered off the Royals' well-going starter, Sean O’Sullivan, in the fifth inning and trimmed the lead just by one run. Francisco Cervelli added an RBI double and Derek Jeter touched an RBI single to ease his team by cutting the
lead to 4-8.
However, Hosmer was not ready to let the Yankees come back in the outing so easily and added another RBI single for his team to advance the lead to 9-4 in the top of the sixth inning. Alcides Escobar hit another RBI double in the top of the eighth inning
to cement the Royals' twentieth win in 2011 season.
The Yankees' top slugger, Alex Rodriguez, swung his bat for a splendid 400-feet long one-run in the bottom of the eighth, but remained helpless to take his team into winning position.
O’Sullivan gave away four runs on six hits, allowed two walks, but could not manage any strikeout, however, won his second win of the season.
Conversely, Nova gave eight runs on ten hits including two homers over just three innings. The reliever, Amaury Sanit, was expensive too, as he gave away three runs on four hits, walked two and made just two strikeouts over four and 2/3 innings. The closer,
B. Carlyle,  pitched scoreless last inning and made three strike-outs.
