Kansas City Royals beaten by Detroit Tigers 0-1 – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals lost to the Detroit Tigers 0-1 in a thrilling encounter as Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Wednesday, October 3 in the finale of their three match series.
After losing to the Tigers in first game of the series, Royals fought back strongly in Game 2 to level the series 1-1. With momentum on their side, Ned Yost and his men had an excellent chance to end the season on a winning note but that did not turn out
to the case. Tigers produced a magical pitching performance to shut-out the Royals in a game that was played on an extremely competitive note.
Starting pitcher Max Scherzer created all sorts of problems for the Royals’ batting line-up as he allowed just three hits in four scoreless innings. Relief pitcher Luis Marte claimed his first win of the season after he gave up just two hits in three plus
shut-out innings.
"It was just a great night for baseball. It couldn't have worked out better," Leyland said afterward. "It was a weird evening, but everything turned out great."
"Our fans are great. We've seen that all year," Royals’ manager Ned Yost said. "Our whole team was doing the same thing, giving him a standing ovation. What he did was amazing."
"Miguel has long been one of the most accomplished hitters in the game," Baseball commissioner Bud Selig said of Tigers’ third baseman Miguel Cabrera, "and this recognition is one that he will be able to cherish for the rest of his career."
For the Royals, starter Luis Mendoza pitched seven solid innings, conceding just six hits and one run. Striking-out six batters, he looked on top of his game but the Tigers were too hot to handle on Wednesday.
The unfortunate Mendoza ended up taking his 10th loss of the season. Relief pitcher Tim Collins, Louis Coleman and Aaron Crow also pitched with great control and accuracy but could not stop the Tigers from securing a deserving victory.
Austin Jackson played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash as he doubled to centre in the fifth inning to break the deadlock.
