Kansas City Royals beaten by Detroit Tigers 2-6 – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals were beaten by the Detroit Tigers 2-6 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Monday, September 24 in the only game between the two sides.
Royals had a great series against the Cleveland Indians and they were looking to continue their good work against their American League Central Division rivals but that did not turn out to be the case.
"We try to entertain everybody," Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland said. "We try to give everybody a good piece of entertainment."
Tigers used their home conditions brilliantly to outclass Kansas City in finer details of the game. With their win, the Tigers also closed down the gap between themselves and the Chicago White Sox to just one game at the top of AL Central standings table.
Royals’ starting pitcher Luke Hochevar paid the ultimate price for his errors on the mound as he allowed 12 hits and six runs in seven plus innings to take his 15th loss of the season. His poor effort raised his ERA to 5.43 and it will be interesting
to see if he can turn things around on his next appearance.
"He just threw strike after strike after strike. There's not much you can do when he's throwing like that," Royals’ manager Ned Yost said of Tigers’ ace Justin Verlander. "We had a couple good at-bats against him, but he was extremely good tonight."
"I gave myself a little bit of a scare -- and everybody else," Verlander said. "But it's my left arm. Maybe I can throw with it just dangling. Who knows?"
Prince Fielder provided Tigers with an excellent start as he smacked a solo home-run to right in the second inning to break the deadlock. Alex Avila also made his presence felt with a double to deep right centre and Jhonny Peralta scored to double Tigers’
lead to 2-0.
Alex Gordon connected for a solo home-run to left in the fourth inning to keep Royals in the contest. All Star selection Billy Butler singled to centre in the eighth to score Royals’ second run but Tigers held on to their lead comfortably to complete a deserving
victory.
