Kansas City Royals beaten by Seattle Mariners 1-4 in series opener – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals were beaten by the Seattle Mariners 1-4 at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington on Thursday, July 26 in the opening game of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Mariners, who put up a solid show in their previous series against the New York Yankees, continued their excellent work on Thursday to make quick work of Royals.
Mariners’ pitching attack, in particular, should be given credit for executing their game plan to perfection. It will be interesting to see if the rotation can give similar results in the next three games to help Seattle secure a much needed a much needed
sweep.
"We just couldn't get anything going," Kansas City manager Ned Yost said in an interview. "Going into the ninth inning, I was glad I gave Billy the 3-0 green light. That was our only hit."
Starting pitcher Jason Vargas showed that he is a gifted player as he pitched eight solid innings to lay the foundations of a comfortable Mariners’ victory. Overall, Vargas gave up just a run with five strike-outs for his 11th win of the season.
Relief pitcher Tom Wilhelmsen gave up just a hit in his one inning for his 12th save of the year.
"This has really been my first home in the big leagues," Vargas said with a big smile on his face. "I was given a lot of opportunity here, and I'm thankful that I've taken advantage of it and thankful that they kept giving me opportunity. I hope that what
I can do out on the field is worth them keeping me here."
First baseman Mike Carp singled to centre in the first inning to put Seattle on the board. Shortstop Brendan Ryan earned an RBI single to left in the fourth to break the tie and right fielder Carlos Peguero doubled to right in the sixth to deny the Royals
entry back into the contest.
For Royals, Billy Butler drove in the only run. Starter Luis Mendoza took another humiliating loss after he gave up nine hits and four runs in just five innings.
