Kansas City Royals beaten by Seattle Mariners 1-6 in series finale - MLB Update
Kansas City Royals were beaten by the Seattle Mariners 1-6 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Thursday, July 19 in the finale of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
For the Mariners, Jesus Montero homered to centre in the second inning to break the deadlock. Montero single to left in the fifth inning gave his team complete control of the situation. Driving in two more runs in closing stages of the game, the Designated
Hitter had one of his season best outings on Thursday.
Chris Getz drove in the only Royals’ run in the fifth inning. The offence has remained a tedious problem for the Royals since the start of the season and it will be interesting to see if they can make some changes in their batting combination to score runs
consistently.
Starting pitcher Will Smith took his third loss of the season after he gave up eight hits and four runs in six plus innings. His counterpart from Seattle, Felix Hernandez pitched eight solid innings, giving up just a run to grab his eighth win of the year.
"I was not thinking about the heat," Hernandez said. "I know it was hot. I just tried to throw strikes and get quick outs.”
"I was not trying to pitch to contact, but just throw strikes," Hernandez said. "It's hot like 103, but I don't feel it that much. I'm trying to get quick outs and get out of the inning."
"He got a lot of quick outs. He was strong again today, a lot of life at end of his pitches and he was down," Mariners’ manager Eric Wedge said. "He really only had to work that last inning."
Royals’ Manager Ned Yost will be disappointed with what he saw from his players throughout this series. Right now, Kansas City is placed fourth on the American League Central Division standings. It will not be wrong to say that the Royals have failed to
live to their immense potential this season.
Although their chances of making it to the playoffs are slim, the Royals can certainly make themselves proud by ending the season on a high note.
