Kansas City Royals clinch a narrow 7-6 win over San Diego Padres – MLB Spring Training
Kansas City Royals clinched a narrow 7-6 win over San Diego Padres at the Lake Elsinore Diamond in Lake Elsinore on Wednesday, April 4 in their Cactus League encounter of the 2012 Major League Baseball Spring Training Session.
Royals’ pitcher Danny Duffy looked on top of his game to help his team emerge victorious in Kansas City’s final outing of this spring. Although some of the batters he faced were minor leaguers, Duffy put together a match winning performance.
Striking out seven batters in three perfect innings, he single handedly won the game for his team. Duffy is one of the most of talented pitchers in the game right now and he will be hoping to put up similar numbers in his future MLB games.
"I don't care who it was against, he looked like the quality pitcher we think he is," manager Ned Yost said. "He was phenomenal. He was banging pitches down in the zone, had tremendous stuff. I think you're going to see some brilliance. He's so much better now than a year ago."
Royals’ batters also made valuable contributions. Terry Evans and Mario Sisson hit two straight home runs in the sixth inning and the Royals came back from behind to end their spring campaign on a high note. For the Padres, Matt Palmer pitched with deadly accuracy, giving up just two hits and unearned run over four solid innings.
"It was a $120 cab ride to the ballpark, and I asked the driver to stop at a sandwich shop. He said he had a great place." Palmer said. "It turned out to be a Mexican place. So I got two tacos and we were on our way."
The Royals had a made a poor start to their 2012 spring campaign. However, they lifted their spirits in the second half of the spring and with their win on Wednesday night the Royals improved their win-loss record to 16-16. Royals’ manger Ned Yost will be very pleased with the way his team has bounced back after giving ordinary results early on. It will be interesting to see if the Royals can win the American League West division title for the first time since 1985.
