Kansas City Royals counter attack for 8-7 win against Seattle Mariners – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals showed great courage and determination as they battled it out for an 8-7 win against the Seattle Mariners at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Wednesday, July 18 in Game 3 of a four match series.
Kyle Seager provided Mariners with another excellent start as he homered to right in the second inning to put his side 1-0 ahead. Mike Moustakas responded for Kansas City with a double to deep right-centre and Billy Butler scored the opening run.
Brayan Pena had an RBI groundout in the second and Chris Getz drove in a crucial run to give Royals the momentum. Casper Wells homered to left in the fourth to level the score 3-3 but Alex Gordon’s double to shallow left restored Royals’ 2-0 lead instantly.
Lorenzo Cain connected for a two run shot in the fifth and Butler hit a tie breaking home-run in the ninth to help the Royals snatch a stunning victory.
"Billy is a special hitter," Royals’ manager Ned Yost said in a post game interview. "He went up in that inning and said, 'I'm going to take the first pitch and I know it's going to be a slider and take a good look at it and gauge it.' He sat on one and
then drove it into the stands.”
Starting pitcher Bruce Chen outpitched his counterpart from the Mariners as he gave up just four runs and seven hits in five plus innings. Relief pitcher Greg Holland pitched the perfect ninth for his fourth win of the season.
Seattle had dominated the Royals in both the opening two games of the series and they had an excellent chance to bag a rare series sweep at Kauffman Stadium. However, the Royals found their lost productivity just at the right time as they secured a tight
8-7 win to keep the series alive.
The Royals will be happy with their efforts as they managed to build up some much needed momentum. It will be interesting to see what impact the Royals can make as they look to become more competitive in this crucial part of the regular season.
