Kansas City Royals defeat Chicago White Sox 4-2 – MLB Update
Danny Duffy threw seven strong innings and Matt Treanor generated a two-run single to help the Kansas City Royals beat Chicago White Sox 4-2 at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday, July 19.
The Royals managed to bounce back only a night after they were beaten 5-2.
In reality, it was Danny Duffy who – after listening to an intensely frank lecture by the manager Ned Yost, kept the game alive for the Royals and held the White Sox hitters from going for big hits.
"He pitched a fantastic game right from the get-go. He was after it all night long," Yost said. "He did a great job of changing speed, utilizing his curveball effectively and did a nice job of keeping them off-balance.”
Duffy himself had an explanation for what actually charged him. “I was really affected by what he said," said Duffy, who was sent to Omaha during the All-Star break. "We're playing for more than just this team. We're playing for the fans."
Although Duffy did not provide a solid start to Kansas City when the game began, in the latter-half, arguably, he was the single most effective pitcher whose throws kept a firm hold on the seemingly straining White Sox hitters.
Duffy gave up two hits in the very first inning when he came for pitching. Kansas City’s starter was subject to a hit by Carlos Quentin who singled to centre to give the White Sox an early 1-0 lead.
Alex Rios followed, as he had another hit simultaneously that doubled the White Sox lead, apparently laying a foundation for another victory a night after they won by 5-2. Nonetheless, the Royals came back early and fought hard.
Jake Peavy threw the first inning scoreless, but the second inning saw Alcides Escobar driving in a tremendous single to bring the White Sox lead down to 2-1. Duffy then went on for stronger innings to keep the Royals in the game.
As Duffy threw the sixth inning, hitless and scoreless after allowing two runs in the very first, Matt Treanor compensated it all in the bottom of sixth inning with a brilliant two-run double that he scored, reversing the Chicago lead and giving the Royals
a 3-2 edge in the game.
Duffy ended his spell of seven innings with five hits and two runs while Chris Sale, who relieved Peavy, was subject to a hit by the talented Melky Cabrera. He homered to give an ultimate 4-2 lead to the Royals that Joakim Soria turned into victory by pitching
a decisive shut-out ninth.
With the victory in the game, the Royals are now back in the three-game series 1-1.
