Kansas City Royals defeat St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 in cliff-hanger – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals secured an emphatic series win as they defeated St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri in the finale of their three game series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
With their win against the Cardinals, the Royals have now improved their record to 29-35 and it will not be wrong to say that they still have a chance to make it to the post season.
Beating the 2011 World Series Champions, Ned Yost and company will be feeling very proud of themselves. It will be interesting to see if they can maintain their excellent form over the next couple of weeks to get over the .500 win percentage mark.
"That's destiny," Betancourt said through an interpreter. "It was my opportunity to put the team ahead twice. I was trying to do my best and it happened."
"I don't even know if I could (describe it)," Kansas City manager Ned Yost said. "We won, that's all I can say."
"He blew the pitch right before by me," Butler said. "I just figured I had to shorten up and put the barrel on it. That's what I did."
The series loss to Kansas City has sent the Cardinals to third place on National League Central Division standings table. Without a shadow of a doubt, St. Louis some of the best hitting and pitching line available to them but they will have to bring more consistency in their game to match their results from last season.
Humberto Quintero made the most of available opportunities as he singled to left and Mike Moustakas scored in the second inning to put the Royals 1-0 ahead. Billy Butler showed just what he is capable of as he homered to left in the bottom of the ninth inning to level score 2-2.
Yunieksy Betancourt had an RBi double to left in the 14th to break the deadlock but the Cardinals battled back immediately to keep their hopes alive. Betancourt stepped on to the plate to hit a mighty two run home run in fifteenth as the Royals took a decisive 5-3 lead.
