Kansas City Royals defeat Toronto Blue Jays 6-4 – MLB Update
Bruce Chen won the fourth consecutive start of his career on Tuesday, August 23 to help the Kansas City Royals beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-4 at Rogers Centre.
Eric Hosmer and Billy Bulter also homered to assist in the magnificent victory.
Chen allowed three runs in 7.2 innings and coupled with nine strike-outs in the game.
Kansas City Royals kicked into action in the top of the second inning when Brandon Morrow came on mound to pitch the second for the Toronto Blue Jays. Eric Hosmer was the first one to homer to give the team a 1-0 lead.
Johnny Giavotella and Salvador Perez scored a run each respectively to triple the lead for the Royals by the end of the second inning that also saw four hits, putting the Blue Jays in an overly difficult position.
With Bruce Chen tossing pitches that were beyond the Blue Jays’ hitters, he constituted a powerful grip on the game, maintaining the 3-0 lead for the Kansas City Royals throughout the better half of the game.
"I was throwing strikes. I was using all my pitches," Chen said. "I had really good command of my curveball, my cutter and my changeup. Today is one of those days where everything was working in and out and I was changing speeds very well."
Billy Butler homered in the fifth to take the edge to 4-0 while Johnny Giavotella and Salvador Perez scored once again in the inning to make it 6-0 by the end of the inning coupled with the four hits that it witnessed.
It was Yunel Escobar who homered in the sixth for the Blue Jays to break the drought of runs. His three-run homer brought the Kansas City Royals lead down to 6-3, which was in effect an attempt to stage a comeback in the game.
Even though Bruce Chen gave up a three-run homer, the team manager was all for allowing him to pitch into the eighth where the team lead remained intact with 6-3, thwarting the Blue Jays attempt to change the balance.
Joakim Soria was brought in as a closer. It was Adam Lind who singled to shallow left to recharge the spirit of the game. But Soria threw stronger pitches subsequently to finish the game with a 6-4 victory for the Kansas City Royals.
The Royals put in a brilliant performance as they managed to restrict the Blue Jays from scoring runs in the last few innings. The Blue Jays will be looking to put in an improved performance before their next match-up. It will be interesting to see how the
Royals carry their winning momentum and new found confidence into their next game.
