Kansas City Royals edge Detroit Tigers 9-8 – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals showed unbelievable fighting abilities as they secure a narrow 9-8 win against the Detroit Tigers at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
With ace Justin Verlander starting the game, Tigers were expected to dominate their opponents but that did not turn out to be the case as Ned Yost and company snatched an emphatic come back from behind victory.
After the Tigers took an early 2-0 lead, Billy Butler singled to centre in the first inning to put Royals on the board. With momentum on their side, Kansas City continued to put pressure on Tigers’ starting pitcher Verlander, scoring three runs in the first.
Mike Moustakas singled to left and Alex Gordon added to double to left in the second to put Royals in a commanding 6-3 position.
Prince Fielder doubled to deep right-centre and Alex Avila earned an RBI single to centre in the third to keep Tigers in the hunt but Royals were too hot to handle on Tuesday. With score tied 8-8 in the eighth inning, Mike Moustakas delivered the go ahead
run to help Royals grab a memorable win.
"I got a hanging slider and hooked it down the line," said Moustakas. "I was able to stay on it and sneak it past. Me and Seitz (hitting coach Kevin Seitzer) were in the cage a lot today to get myself in a good position to hit and it paid off today. I felt
a lot more relaxed at the plate and a lot more confident because I was able to see the ball, see it and not just swing."
"I no more got in the dugout and turned to Dave (pitching coach Dave Eiland) and said, `I hope this works,’" Ned Yost said.
Starting pitcher Luis Mendoza gave up seven hits and six runs in five solid innings while striking-out four batters. Mendoza will be looking to improve his control and accuracy in his upcoming starts. Relief pitcher Aaron Crow allowed a hit in just over
an inning for his third win of the season.
