Kansas City Royals edge Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals showed great fighting abilities, temperament and mental strength as they edged Milwaukee Brewers at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Tuesday, June 12 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League
Baseball regular season.
Ned Yost and company will be very pleased with the way they handled their nerves in a pressure game. With their win against the Brewers on Tuesday evening, Kansas City improved their record to 25-34 and it will be interesting to see if they can get any close
to the .500 win percentage mark before the All Star Break.
Much of the crowd present at the Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday showed up to see Zack Greinke take on his former team for the first time this season. However, by the sixth inning, their attention had diverted to the Royals’ starting pitcher Luis Mendoza.
"Some closers are like that," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "They come into the game and at the end of the day, he gets the job done."
"We ran into one of the better pitchers in baseball, if not the best on any given night," Butler said. "You can argue Mendoza outpitched him."
"Every inning it's like, `OK, no hits this inning.' Of course, I knew it was a no-hitter," said Mendoza.
"You have to keep it a close game because Greinke's a great pitcher."
The starter showed great control over his dipping fastballs and low trajectory curveballs as he took a no hitter into the seventh inning. The fans supported their team right till the end of the game to celebrate a narrow 2-1 win.
Alex Gordon displayed some top quality hitting skills as he homered to right centre in the first inning to score the first run for the Royals.
Credit should also be given to designated hitter Billy Butler who drove in a tie breaking run in the eighth and the Royals held on to their slim lead to seal an incredible victory. Relief pitcher Jonathan Broxton ended the game on a high note to wrap up
his 15th save of the season.
