Kansas City Royals edge out Boston Red Sox 10-9 as Tony Abreu singles in the twelfth - MLB Update
Second baseman Tony Abreu singles in the twelfth and sends Jeff Francoeur aboard as the Kansas City Royals beat the Boston Red Sox 10-9 in a nail biter on August 25, 2012 at Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts in the second game of the four match series.
In spite of losing the game, Boston can take heart from the fact that with the absence of some of their quality players in the line-up they managed to post substantial number of runs. As they have lost Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford in a
trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday, their offence is likely to suffer.
Fortunately for them, this was not seen during the game as they struck 20 hits on Saturday. However what proved unfortunate for them was the way they were eventually defeated.
Red Sox were prolific at the start scoring nine runs in a span of just four innings. From there onward their victory was the most likely conclusion of the match.
However Royals countered their lead and by adding six runs in the seventh as they almost turned the tables on them.
The relief pitcher Andrew Miller proved the Red Sox’s undoing as he allowed Kansas City to make a decisive come back into the game by giving up four runs in little less than one inning.
The outcome of the match was decided through additional innings. Tenth and the eleventh innings went scoreless and therefore the pressure mounted on either side in the twelfth. Thanks to the single by Abreu toward left, Royals embraced an incredible triumph.
Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine appeared disheartened after losing the game from a situation where they were heading toward an easy win.
"It was frustrating," Valentine said. "We couldn't get that third out in the seventh inning. Had about four tries."
Two more games remain in the series. Red Sox can make up for the loss by putting up a splendid performance in the next two matches.
Red Sox will be low on confidence at this moment and therefore putting aside their wounds and focusing on the game is not going to be easy for them. It will be interesting to see how they cope with the current situation and pull off wins in the remainder
of the season.
