Kansas City Royals edge out Chicago White Sox 2-1 – MLB Update
Luis Mendoza threw over seven strong innings on Sunday, September 25 to help the Kansas City Royals edge past the Chicago White Sox 2-1 at U.S. Cellular Field.
Returning after a long stint from the game, Mendoza exhibited a great performance to guide his team’s victory.
This was his second consecutive winning start as the win to him and his team meant the 11th defeat for the Chicago White Sox in the last 15 games. For Ozzie Guillen, this is the third team in his career as a manager which has suffered defeat under
his aegis.
For the Kansas City Royals, however, the performance was satisfactory. Unlike Ozzie Guillen who said he did not expect anything less from the White Sox, the Royals’ manager had something relatively good to say about the team.
"That was their 'A' lineup in there," Royals’ manager Ned Yost said. "He really did a great job. He does a real good job of keeping hitters uncomfortable because they don't know what to look for. He's come a long way."
But in all probability, were it not for Mendoza who pitched right into the eighth inning, it would not be possible for the Kansas City Royals to score this victory. Mendoza threw 7.2 innings, allowed only a run and gave up five hits with four strike-outs,
having made a wonderful 1.23 ERA in the game.
"I just put it in my mind to pitch strong to finish the year and try to be aggressive," Mendoza said. "Just work inside, to lefties and righties, just pound the zone inside and mix my pitches."
Gavin Floyd did also try to contain the Royals’ hitters as he pretty much succeeded in doing so. Having not allowed even a single hit until the sixth inning, Floyd was all braced for having a shut-out, but his efforts did not bear fruit.
However, Lorenzo Cain and Chris Getz had back-to-back hits that paved the way for Dyson to score a two-run double to give the Kansas City Royals a safe 2-0 lead at the top of the sixth inning. That lead was effectively maintained by Mendoza up until the
eighth with Paul Konerko scoring a run.
Greg Holland barely allowed the White Sox offence to go for any run and sent all the hitters packing to wrap up the game with a 2-1 victory for the Kansas City Royals.
The Royals put in a brilliant performance as they fought hard throughout the game and managed to dominate the White Sox offence. Chicago will be looking to improve their performance before their next match-up. It will be interesting to see how the Royals
carry their winning momentum forward.
