Kansas City Royals edge past Seattle Mariners 2-1 to level four-game series 2-2 – MLB Update
The Kansas City Royals held their nerve to defeat the Seattle Mariners 2-1 in the fourth game of the four-game series on Sunday, September 11 at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington.
The series did not have much significance apart from personal glory and the Royals did well in the end to comeback from 0-2 down to level the series 2-2. Everett Teaford produced five scoreless innings for the Royals to win his first game in his first start
at the Majors, striking-out five batters and leaking just three hits in the process.
Teaford was rejoiced with a perfect start and said, "It's unreal. To have my 100th (professional) start my first big-league start and my first win of my career, and my dad here. It's awesome to have him in town. You can't write a better story than that.”
Anthony Vasquez could not replicate his counterpart and went on to lose his third game of the season for the Mariners. The Seattle starter has won just one start this season and sports an unhealthy earned-run average of 7.29 for the season. Vasquez was charged
for two runs amid seven hits in his spell to give the Royals an extra run to play with.
Alcides Escobar scored the first run for the Royals in the third inning before Brayan Pena doubled the lead in the seventh inning. Alex Gordon drove in both runs for the visitors, improving his average to .299 for the season. He has been, by far, the best
batter in the line-up and the management will now be looking to inject fresh legs to improve consistency.
The Mariners made a reply in the eighth inning when Ichiro Suzuki drove in a run to right-field, allowing Michael Saunders to trim the deficit to just one-run, but no other batter helped Seattle in eradicating the lead.
Blake Wood pitched two perfect innings in the middle to hold his fourth game for the Royals before Joakim Soria replicated his effort in the ninth to save his 28th for the season.
Steve Delabar also pitched a perfect ninth for the Mariners but Vasquez had leaked a run-too-much for the Mariners to chase.
