Kansas City Royals fall to Baltimore Orioles 3-5 in series finale – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals fell to Baltimore Orioles 3-5 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Sunday, August 12 in the finale of their four match series.
Rookie Manny Machado played a key role in Orioles victory, who split the four game series on Sunday. Machado homered to right centre in the second inning to put the Orioles 2-0 ahead.
Nick Markakis also made the most of scoring opportunities, adding a solo home-run to right centre in the fifth and Mary Reynolds singled to left in the sixth to give Baltimore a much needed victory.
"I like him. I was impressed," Royals' manager Ned Yost said. "The scouting reports that we got said he had a couple of holes in his swing. We couldn't find them. He hurt us. He won two games for them against us with homers. He hit the ball to center field.
He hits the ball to left field."
"We've had a couple games where we had to use a lot of people," Showalter said. "But we felt at the time we could keep it close and we could match up out of the bullpen the last four innings."
Credit should be give to O’s starting pitcher Tommy Hunter who created all sorts of problems for Royals’ batting line-up. In five solid innings, Hunter allowed just three runs. Relief pitcher Jim Johnson, Troy Patton and Pedro Strop combined to pitch three
scoreless inning to help the Orioles hold on to a two run lead.
For the Royals, Mike Moustakas homered and Brayan Pena played a useful hand but their effort did not prove to be enough. Baltimore, who face Boston Red Sox next, will be looking to carry forward their winning momentum.
In some ways, it was an extremely important win for the Orioles who have now moved to third place on the American League East Division standings table. Orioles’ Manager Buck Showalter will be disappointed with the result of the series. With home conditions
working in their favour, the Orioles had an excellent chance to sweep the struggling Royals but that did not turn out to be the case.
